“The world is bursting with wonder, and yet it's the rare productivity guru who seems to have considered the possibility that the ultimate point of all our frenetic doing might be to experience more of that wonder.”

About

Hi, I'm Nick Parsons.

Nick Parsons, founder of The Automation Foundry

I like to think of myself as a craftsman of technology, bringing together the benefits of modern tech & AI with the sturdiness of old-fashioned values and standards of excellence.

I do a lot of thinking — sometimes to a fault, and to the extent that it's a running family joke that led my wife to jestingly buy me a t-shirt that says, "Hold on, let me overthink this."

But I believe that in this era of instant but questionable solutions and ratcheting pressure to go ever faster and do ever more, there's a place for deep thoughtfulness and intentionality... for slowing down to shift into a mode that's less reactive and more grounded in clarity on what really matters and where we're really going.

I've loved working with computers since I was a kid, but more than that I've always loved living in the seams of things — the interplay between form and function, intuition and logic, human and machine. In this new era of AI that's both exciting and scary, I'm passionate about doing my best to help people navigate it thoughtfully, and hopefully get more out of work & life as a result.

Beliefs

A few things I believe

  1. Change is constant.

It's part of being human. Usually uncomfortable, frequently very difficult, but also where most opportunity, growth, and meaning are found. Getting curious, going deep, and avoiding the temptation to go it alone can open up surprising fruitfulness.

  2. Hurry is toxic.

That's not to say there isn't a place for speed, or the burn of joyful exertion toward something that matters. But I'm increasingly convinced that hurry — and its offspring of shortcuts, distraction, and diffusion — is at odds with the best things of life.

  3. You're not behind.

A lot of forces converge to make us feel that way... some intentional (fear is an effective manipulation lever), some not (ingrained scripts and habits). They all push us to rush and to miss what's available right now. You're right where you need to be, and probably further along than you think.

  4. We have a choice.

Technology — and AI specifically — is a multiplier. It can make us shallower and weaker, or it can help us become effective and alive. We can use it to bypass thinking or to refine and strengthen it. Agency is more important and more potent than ever, and it's a skill we can build and compound.

Engagement

A few things I can help with

I think of tech consulting work as landing somewhere on a spectrum of done-for-you ↔ done-with-you, and the right mix is very individual. Whatever that ratio looks like, what I'm most excited about is helping you get mastery (not another ongoing cost or dependency, but confidence, autonomy and ability to get stuff done).
